Assault prevention is everybody’s business. Each of us can learn simple and effective prevention tools and can encourage a society where violence is unacceptable. When all of us get involved, in our own way, we limit the number of assaults on vulnerable people.
The Child Assault Prevention (CAP) Project
Children as a group are particularly vulnerable to assault of all kinds. When we look only at sexual assault, the statistics are striking : 1 out of every 3 girls and 1 out of every 6 boys are sexually assaulted before the age of 18. But many children also face difficulties with peers. No child should have to accept verbal, physical, or sexual assault. For this reason, we work with parents and school staff as well as with children aged 3 and 1/2 to 12 years of age.
“After CAP, I noticed that older kids stopped bullying younger children”
Confidence, Solidarity and Respect
This workshop is designed for older children who have already participated in a CAP workshop. It emphasizes self-esteem, and respect for others while finding solutions to situations of assault that we may witness.
New - workshop for adults on discipline
For more information on the workshop dealing with the sensitive issue of discipline, please communicate with the Centre.
ACTION: Self-defense for Women and Teen Girls
Did you know that all women and teen girls can defend themselves?
We just need to know how! This workshop is for all women between the ages of 18 and 99, and all are welcome.
“ACTION changed my life”
Diversity in ACTION
This 6-hour workshop is designed for women who have recently immigrated, who are fleeing their violent partners, who belong to a minority and/or are experiencing discrimination. It is based on the ACTION workshop but is offered in a more condensed version in a simplified language. Call us for more information.
ACTION for women with physical disabilities
The ACTION workshop is available for women who have various physical restrictions. A specially designed workshop can be arranged for blind women, deaf women or for women who use a wheelchair or other mobility supports like canes. Each of these workshops focuses on the strengths of the participants, and women are encouraged to find their own solutions, rather than their restrictions. For this reason, it is more effective to share skills with women with similar disabilities.
Workshops for adults with an intellectual disability
The Montreal Assault Prevention Centre staff have developed a workshop for adults with an intellectual disability. As with all programs offered by the Centre, this workshop focuses on the participants’ individuals capacities and teaching a variety of tools that are adapted to the community. This workshop can be offered in different formats to better meet the needs of a specific group.
Partners and training at the Centre
The Centre is very active at the Montreal Table de concertation en matière d’agression sexuelle as well as in many issues surrounding women’s rights (World Wide March of Women - Take back the night) and may even act as spokesperson around issues surrounding prevention such as gun control. We are also involved in training students from various university departments (social work, sexology, community pediatrics). We support the work of RECAA (Ressources ethnoculturelles contre l’abus des aînéEs) with seniors because seniors share their resources with each other.
We were also involved in the CAFSU (Comité d’action femmes et sécurité urbaine) for over twelve years. See CAFSU for more information.
At the moment, we are hoping to work more closely with the Centre ontario de prévention des agressions (COPA) to share skills and tools in designing even more programming for vulnerable groups.
